September 14, 2024- Week 34
Today I finally welcomed running water. After one week, I reflect on how tough those with an inconsistent water supply are and have come to understand how vital this human right is - to have clean drinking water.
I am grateful for the community around me offering to let me do my laundry and shower at their place. I have gone into a routine of taking showers at the gym and purchasing 5L bottles of water to take home with me - what a workout!
Outside of the water situation, I had many roles at School this week: IT technician, receptionist, Media designer, Accountant...one day I may even be the chef - imagine their horror if "salad" appears on the canteen menu.
Talking about food, I visited an Ital restaurant with a friend after visiting the markets. It had Rasta vybz and the food was one of the best I have tasted: Ibo Spice Portal. They even showed us how they made traditional medicine by putting a live centipede into a bottle of rum. They dropped the centipede a few times and I had to stop myself from squishing it under my shoe out of instinct!

I also went to a Chinese festival held by the Chinese embassy in Jamaica. In true Caribbean spirit, I arrived late: "mi late, but mi reach!". I explored the Chinese Garden and admired the Jamaicans who wore traditional Chinese costumes. My curiosity about why the Chinese moved to Jamaica is still not quenched, one day I shall find the answer to this question.
