April 1, 2024 - Week 10
Holy week. I knew Jamaica has one of the most churches per square mile in the world, but I underestimated the level of worship that actually comes with these churches.
These Jamaicans live and breathe their religion and at the same time it is a stern reminder to me not to be lukewarm in my own faith. The week (characterized by purple colors) was marked with a worship service each day of holy week culminating in resurrection Sunday (where white was worn). Albeit I was too lazy to join, mind you the services were at 7/8 am, I did manage to watch a recording and it was eye-opening - imagine a play with a black Jesus + disciples and narration of the gospel in Patois! Can you decipher this: The Lud's suppa.
I have observed that even before events, classes, or gatherings, the Jamaicans would pray. During class, the students would also recall their principle that "I can do all things through Him who gives me strength" and "faith without works is dead" - note the school is not religiously affiliated. Even my local coffee shop writes Bible-inspired messages on my coffee sleeves.
This was a quiet week, but one filled with reflections.
